Employment Program

Empowering our Youth through employment opportunities

The youth employment program offers young adults the opportunity to leave the reservation to work and live in a new town for the summer to gain work training and experience new surroundings and activities.

This innovative new program connects Lakota workers (ages 18 to 25) with businesses in need of seasonal employees. While Pine Ridge has an unemployment rate of 80%, many employers in prime travel destinations struggle with a shortage of workers.

Working Together For A Solution

We provide young adults opportunities to earn money and have an adventure while learning job skills that they can use to gain self-sufficiency and support the economy on the Reservation. The Summer Employment Program provides transportation to the job location, on-going and constant support, recreational activities, and workshops/classes to grow their skill sets. One Spirit supporter Sarah Hamilton, who operates a resort in Cook County, MN, was instrumental in creating this already-successful program.

As of 2025, the Employment Program has one location : Cook County, Minnesota. All positions have been filled for 2025.

About the Employment Program

In 2019, the One Spirit Employment program began in northern Minnesota. Its goal was to provide young people with a chance to learn skills, earn money and experience positive interactions with people from other cultures while also having fun. The Lakota were connected with businesses in Cook County, a popular tourist destination with major labor shortages during the summer season. It was a win-win for everyone involved and overall a huge success.

Gunflint Trail & Grand Marais

The Gunflint Trail is the only paved road in Cook County accessing the 1 000 000 acres of designated wilderness. And with hundreds of lakes in the county, there's a staggering amount of things to do.

As summer nears, the tourism industry takes off. People from all over come to relax, have fun & venture into the wild. Small local businesses need help through the busy season, but once winter comes 'round, both the weather and the business cools down into a relaxed atmosphere. In a matter of weeks, Grand Marais grows into a bustling town with many events and attractions.
