South Dakota Arts Council donated $4850 in support of our youth arts program, consisting of art classes for kids in acrylic and pastel media by talented Lakota artist Kevin Poor Bear. This donation will help support a place where hope can thrive and enable the students to express themselves in a positive, healthy way. Thank you, South Dakota Arts Council, for your generosity! South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund donated $7000 in support of one of our youth programs, Lakota Youth Fishing Camps! This donation will help Lakota youth learn to fish, prepare the fish to eat in a traditional manner, and learn about stream conservation. Thank you, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund! Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company Foundation donated $5000 in support of one of our youth programs, Horse Spirit Camps! We are a worldwide group of all-volunteer members dedicated to providing the tools and employment needed to address severe nutritional shortages in a food desert, almost 90% unemployment, and a lack of facilities to support children and the elderly culturally and in providing better living conditions. Our Mission To work in partnership with the citizens of Pine Ridge Reservation to fulfill their vision of a self-sufficient and independent future. In 2024, a tragic fire struck a family of 12 on Pine Ridge Reservation, destroying their home and their belongings. One Spirit's donors rallied around them, raising enough funds that we were able to help them secure a new home. "Many wopilas to all the sponsors of One Spirit. I'm truly grateful and blessed you have lifted our spirits and gave us strength to go on during this hard time in our lives." Want To Send A Package Donation? New or gently used donations are valuable to people in need on the reservation. We partner with Give Back Box to provide items a second life. Before sealing your package for shipping, please include a note with a brief description of the items enclosed, which program they are to go to (if applicable, see below), and any comments you want to add. This avoids confusion upon delivery and ensures your package is sent to the right person. About The Lakota People of Pine Ridge Reservation Strong & Beautiful, Rich In Culture The Oglala Lakota Nation has a history dating back thousands of years. Oglala is a Lakota word meaning "to scatter one's own." The Oglala Lakota Nation is one of the seven bands of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Seven Council Fires). A majority of the Oglala live on Pine Ridge. Most still honor their ancient traditions in the way they live their lives today. One Spirit supports the Lakota in their mission to become a food-sovereign, energy-independent nation, able to care for their young and old alike. Where is Pine Ridge Reservation? The Pine Ridge Reservation is in the southwestern corner of South Dakota. It is part of a larger territory established for the Lakota in 1868 by the United States government, later broken up into smaller tribal reservations and parceled out to non-Native homesteaders. Pine Ridge is the eighth-largest reservation in the US, home to about 40,000 Native Americans. According to the US Census Bureau , the Pine Ridge reservation lies within the poorest counties in the United States.
